The function ‘ignore bot clicks’ is implemented in the new release 8.6 of Ternair Marketing Cloud.
This function detects and filters clicks on email hyperlinks that we are receiving and registering from bots. These clicks are polluting the real number of clicks on your emailings. This filter applies to both the email statistics of previous as well as future emailings.
Background clicks through bots
To protect the inbox of the recipient, mail providers use spam filters and/or bots.
In a number of cases, these spam filters have an impact on the email statistics of your emailings. Some of these ‘ spam filters / bots’ are configured to, before the mail is delivered into the recipients mailbox, check part of, or all, the hyperlinks in the mail by clicking them. The aim of this check is to prevent the recipient from receiving a mail with potentially harmful hyperlinks in it. The drawback of this “incorrect” clicks is that these clicks are registered as regular clicks within the mail statistics.
Function ‘ignore bot clicks’ in Ternair
The function ‘ignore bot clicks’ is implemented in the new release 8.6 of Ternair Marketing Cloud.
With the implemented ‘ignore bot clicks’ the email statistics are filtered based on a list of known ’spam filter’ IP addresses. Our analysis shows that, by filtering out those IP addresses, over 90% of these unjust clicks are filtered out.
Future optimizations
For the long term we are working on the following solution:
- We will included a default ‘honey pot’ link in each email. IP addresses that generate clicks on this link will automatically be added to the ‘spam filter IP addresses’ list.
- Furthermore we are going to collect more meta-data from the ‘clients’, in order to further optimise the filtering in the future.
