With the output function ‘E-mail’ e-mailings can be defined in Ternair Campaign.
Drag an E-mail block onto the worksheet. Connect the E-mail block to one or more selection blocks.
Double click the E- mail block to open the setting screen.
On the left hand side in an e-mail block the addresses, subject, pre-header and e-mail content are displayed. On the right hand side the settings can be found.
This section focuses on the following topics; each topic consists of a tab in the settings (right hand side) of an e-mail block.
|Templates||Select e-mail templates|
|User Content||Save user content block|
|Images||Managing e-mail images|
|Data||Mapping personalized e-mail fields|
|Hyperlinks||Overview hyperlinks and tags & trackers|
|RSS||Manage RSS feeds and select RSS messages|
|Options||Options for e-mail block: for example confirmation e-mail, content transformation and contacts|
|Validate||Validate e-mail content and mapping|
|Test||Sending test e-mail(s)|
|A/B test||Sending a/b test|
On the top left of the e-mail block the following fields can be defined:
- Sender description; for example: Ternair
- Sender e-mail address; for example: firstname.lastname@example.org
- Reply to e-mail address: when this field is empty, replies are send to the sender e-mail address; for example: email@example.com
- Subject line for the e-mail
- Pre-header (optional): the pre-header for the e-mail
A fixed list of allowed sender and/or reply-to e-mail addresses can be defined in the Ternair Campaign backoffice. Only values from the pre-defined list(s) can be selected and it is not possible to manually enter another e-mail address.
For creating content of an e-mail there are multiple options; by using your own HTML (1), use an existing template (2) or create your own e-mail with snippets (3).
For option one the HTML-editor can be used to type or copy-paste your own existing HTML code into the editor.
Document outline view
When a template is created or selected, the e-mail can be edited (on the left hand side).
In de document outline view (on the right hand side) it is possible to select the e-mail snippet.
Click on the arrow at the right top to collapse the document outline.
Option two selecting an existing template. You can find your own templates in the local repository (recognizable by the marker icon). You can find standard templates in the global repository (recognizable by the globe icon).
After selecting an existing template, this template can be edited (on the left hand side). There are multiple options to edit content:
– click the content you want to edit and use the context menu to edit the content
– add snippets (see Snippets)
– edit images (see Images)
– add RSS messages (see RSS)
With various parts in the template, for instance texts or images, a number of icons are shown. The table below provides a description for each of these symbols.
|Edit content / text|
|Select and edit (rotate/mirror) image TIP: An image can be dragged into the content from the Images tab (when using ternair-img)|
|Copy this content block|
|Delete this content block|
|Add info/context to an item: for example alt-text, tooltip, hyperlink (on image)|
|Undo / rotate image left|
|Redo / rotate image right|
|Mirror image horizontally|
|Mirror image vertically|
|Go to the parent block|
|Indicates the type of html block that is selected. When HTML editing is allowed (Options tab) the HTML hierarchy is displayed in the tooltip.|
|Indicates the type of image block that is selected. When HTML editing is allowed (Options tab) the HTML hierarchy is displayed in the tooltip.|
Move over an icon with your mouse to see which part of the template can be edited via that icon. Depending upon the available action the selected part of the template lights up in a certain color.
You can undo/redo changes by using the ‘Undo’ and ‘Redo’ buttons on the top left.
Use the buttons on the top right for a preview of the e-mail on desktop (default) or mobile device.
It is also possible to define a landing page in Ternair Campaign and invoke this page from the e-mail. A landing page can be used for a so-called ‘soft landing’ from your e-mail, since someone clicking a link in the e-mail will not directly be send to a general page on your website but to a custom page in stead. For example a promotion page containing an offer specifically for the recipients of your e-mailing.
A landing page can be created in the template section of Ternair Campaign.
More details and examples: HTML Editor.
For option three; drag one or more snippets from the snippets tab to the left hand side of the e-mail block in order to build an e-mail with snippets.
You can find your own snippets in the local repository (recognizable by the marker icon). You can find the global snippets in the global repository (recognizable by the globe icon).
Furthermore snippets can be used in templates containing snippet blocks.
A blue dotted (out)line of the drop zone is shown when dragging an item (snippet, RSS message, image, etc.) onto the worksheet. Snippets can be ordered by dragging them up/down in the content.
The content of snippets can be edited similarly to editing the content of e-mail templates (see previous paragraph).
Parts of the content (i.e. snippets) from an e-mail can be saved. A ‘user content block’ can be re-used in every e-mail.
Select user a snippet content block and use the ‘save’ icon to save the content block.
Provide a name, description and tags (optionally). The retention is used to indicate how long the user content block is available. After the expiration of the retention date, the block is no longer available.
Images that have been added on the Images tab (via the + icon) can be used in the content of the e-mail block in which they have been added.
The images can be used to replace images (with a ternair-img class) in the e-mail. Drag an image to the left and release it once a green border is visible around the image you want to replace.
Depending on the class that is used (ternair-img or ternair-img-expert) several editing options are available for images that are placed in an e-mail.
– ternair- img: rotate, mirror, alt-text, tooltip, hyperlink
– ternair-img-expert: rotate, mirror, alt-text, tooltip, hyperlink, crop, resize
It is possible to add a background image in an email.
Background image and background image settings can be edited. These settings include:
|Background image||Select image.|
|Image size|| Determine the size for the background image.
|Repeat||Repeat background image|
|Position|| Determine the position for the background image. The first value is the horizontal position and the second value is the vertical.
Units can be pixels, % or keywords.
A ‘video’ snippet can be used to add a video in an email.
The video snippets settings screen contains the following options.
|Video url|| Select video.
N.B. the video snippet does not support youtube videos for which you do not have the direct url.
|Fallback link url||The anchor link in case an email cliënt does not support videos|
|Fallback image url||The anchor image in case an email cliënt does not support videos|
|Controls|| When selected, it specifies that video controls should be displayed. Video controls include:
|Autoplay||When selected, the video plays automatically, without action from an user.|
|Video type||The media type of the video.|
|Image url||Select a background image – same as fallback image url.|
All fields you would like to use in the e-mail need to be selected (‘mapped’) on this tab.
These fields consist of:
- E-mail (= mandatory)
- Fields for personalizing / dynamic content (= optional)
More details: Mapping.
More details: Personalization / dynamic content.
Use the + icon on the top right to add one or more fields to the Data library.
After the fields have been added to the Data library (right column) they need to be ‘mapped’ to the fields in the left column E-mail fields.
Use the button ‘Automap fields’ (see image below) or drag the field from the right column to the corresponding field in the left column.
Fields in the left column, E-mail fields, are automatically added from the content in the e-mail when brackets are placed around a field in the content, for example [first name]
Personalization / dynamic content
E-mail content can be defined dynamically.
By adding conditions referring to data within the marketing database the subject, sender e-mail address, sender description and content of an e-mail can be filled dynamically.
Personalization field scan be called by placing brackets [ ] before and after the name of the personalization field.
Examples: [FIRST NAME] [FUNCTION]
It is also possible to define personalization for empty and non-empty field values.
For more details and examples: Personalization & dynamic content.
On the ‘Hyperlinks’ tab Tags, Trackers and a Custom Tracker query can be added to hyperlinks in the e-mail template. Indicate, per link, whether statistics for a hyperlink need to be registered in the e-mail report by (de-)selecting the checkbox in the Stats column. By default all hyperlinks are included in the report.
Hyperlinks can also refer to a landing page that has been defined in Ternair Campaign.
The maximum length for a hyperlink is 999 characters.
Add a tag to a hyperlink to add additional information to a link. Tags can, for instance, be added in order to group hyperlinks referring to similar content. This makes it easier to group clicking behavior on (a group of) hyperlinks. The maximum length for a tag is 512 characters. An error (red outline) is displayed when a tag exceeds the maximum length.
In the clicks overview in the e-mail statistics per hyperlink the associated tags are shown.
Via ‘Trackers’ additional information can be added to a hyperlink in order for the hyperlink to be recognized by external systems. A ‘Google Analytics tracker’, for example, can be used to relate website traffic data to an e-mail campaign.
A tracker is selected, per link, from a drop-down list. Trackers need to be predefined.
For more details on how to define tags and trackers: Tags & Trackers.
The ‘Custom tracker query’ can be used to define a tracker that is only to be used in the current selection. Just like a tracker, a custom tracker query can both hold a default value (for example link=1) as well as a personalized value (for example [TID] or [campaign code]). The maximum length for a custom tracker is 256 characters. An error (red outline) is displayed when a custom tracker exceeds the maximum length.
Messages from an RSS feed can be added to an e-mail when this is defined in the template or when RSS snippets are used.
Select a message on the RSS tab and drag it to a RSS position in the e-mail. RSS positions are highlighted in the content when dragging an RSS item.
Use the block with the RSS icon in order to add a merge-at-execute RSS block to the e-mail. When using this block the RSS messages are merged from the RSS feed when sending out the e-mail (see HTML editor).
Use the settings in the editor to select the number of messages and the number of the start message.
Use the + icon on the top right in order to add a new RSS feed.
Option: Confirmation e-mail
An e-mail address can be provided for sending an e-mail notification (confirmation e-mail containing process information) as soon as all e-mails are sent.
Option: Content transformation
This section contains two options:
– minify CSS
– minify HTML
The default setting for these options is ‘Off’. By checking one, or both, of the two options the content for the respective component in the e-mail are minified. By minifying one or both components the size (in Kb) of an e-mail is reduced.
By reducing the size of an e-mail the e-mail can be loaded more quickly and/or be displayed better in certain e-mail clients.
By selecting this option the cascading style sheet that is used in the e-mail is minified. This option will reduce the size of the CSS in the content. Spaces, enters and tabs, among other things, are removed.
By selecting this option the HTML of the e-mail is minified. Minifying the HTML will, among other things, remove unnecessary spaces within tags, comments and redundant characters from the HTML. Furthermore multiple subsequent spaces are converted to a single space.
Minify CSS and/or HTML is applied in the following locations:
– preview screen
– when sending a test e-mail
– when executing an e-mail block
The minified CSS and/or HTML is not visible in the content section of an e-mail block. Furthermore CSS and/or HTML is not minified in the online viewer and on landing pages.
N.B. minifying CSS and/or HTML may have an impact on the lay-out of an e-mail.
With this option it can be specified whether image slurping should be turned on or off.
While attaching the e-mail content a background process is started which downloads all the online images and HTML content to the server that sends out the e-mail (a Ternair e-mail server). The original HTML hyperlink to an image is replaced by an hyperlink referring to the location of the image on a Ternair server. The re-allocating process for images is completely automatic.
An HTML hyperlink to an online image will not be changed when it is not possible to download the image to a Ternair server.
The image ‘slurper’ prevents e-mails from being marked as spam; since by using the construction described above all images in the e-mail originate from the domain sending the e-mail.
The image ‘slurper’ works as follows:
An imaged will be slurped when, within the <img> tag, an image is included in the src (not case sensitive) and has a valid image extension. Valid image extensions are jpg, jpeg, jpe, gif, bmp, png.
Exceptions can be added for images that should not be included by the ‘image-slurper’. By using an * (asterisk) partial exceptions can be defined. For example www.domain.com/images/*
All images containing the link www.domain.com/images/ will be excluded from the images slurper.
Under Contacts the contact can be created for records receiving the e-mail.
For more information regarding creating and removing contacts see: Contacts
Use this option to enable/disable editing the HTML content of an e-mail.
Option: A/B test
With the output option ‘A/B testing’ an A/B test can be created and automatically executed in Ternair Campaign.
Select the Options tab and check the option A/B test (under Extra).
A new tab A/B appears. Provide the settings for the A/B test: the number of segments, criteria for determining the winner and the schedule for sending out the winning e-mail to the remainder of the selection.
After providing the A/B test criteria and saving the e-mail block the A/B test blocks appear in the flow chart, next to the e-mail block. Initially the test blocks are filled with the content and settings from the e-mail block in which the A/B test is created.
N.B. after saving the e-mail block the content and settings of the e-mail block can no longer be edited. In the A/B test blocks the content for the different test segments can be created and edited.
After creating the content for the A/B test the e-mail block can be manually executed or scheduled for execution. The test blocks are executed immediately (manual) or at the scheduled moment (via a schedule). The winning e-mail is sent automatically based on the provided settings for the A/B test.
On this tab the following validations are executed:
- Are all of the used personalization fields correct?
- Are all of the used fields mapped?
- Are all of the used images correct?
- Are all of the used hyperlinks correct?
- Is the HTML correct?
Use the button on the top right to re-execute the validation.
Only validation errors are shown.
Errors can be used as input for altering the e-mail content. Close the ‘Validate content’ screen to continue configuring the e-mail.
If a landing page is also referred in the e-mail, errors that occur when validating the landing page are also shown.
The ‘Test’ tab provides the following options:
- (Pre-)viewing (personalized) e-mail
- Sending a maximum of 10 test e-mails
- Sending an individual e-mail
Viewing personalized e-mail messages for all relations in the selection
Click on the for a (pre-)view of a (personalized) e-mail
Except for the e-mail address the other fields that are used in the mapping can be edited on the test tab in order to test / preview the personalization of an e-mail. These manual changes are only used for the test e-mails. The underlying data is not edited and/or changed.
You can, for example, edit the value in the column gender to preview personalization based on gender.
Sending 10 test e-mails
Enter e-mail addresses for the recipients of a test e-mail, semicolon separated ( ; ) on the ‘Test’ tab. Optionally the subject of the test e-mail can be changed in order to make clear that it is a test e-mail. Click the ‘Send’ button to send a maximum of 10 test e-mails to the provided e-mail address(es).
Sending 1 test e-mail
Click on the to send an individual test e-mail. The e-mail will open in a pop-up window providing the opportunity to inspect the content and send an individual test message.
Change URLs after sending e-mailing
After an e-mailing has been sent it is possible that URLs are incorrect or do not work.
The function ‘Change URLs’ provides the opportunity to change URLs afterwards. When the receivers of an e-mail click on the ‘incorrect’ hyperlink in the e-mail, they will be automatically redirected to the changed URL.
If a hyperlink is changed after sending an e-mail, this will be shown visually in the click statistics in the e-mail statistics.
Email addresses are checked, before sending, against a suppression list. This list contains email addresses that cannot be delivered. The list is automatically maintained by Ternair Campaign based on bouncers.
This means that these e-mail addresses are no longer registered as bouncer but as denied.
